My Real Father Is the Man Who Protected Me From You" — And Then the Door Flew Open

Victor Brooks stepped out of the shadows.

The warmth that had once been on his face was gone.

He held out one hand toward the diary Isabella clutched tightly against her chest.

"Give it to me."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You have no idea what you're holding."

Isabella took one slow step backward.

This time...

She wasn't afraid.

She looked directly into his eyes.

Not at the man who claimed to be her biological father...

But at the man who had spent twenty-five years chasing a woman who never wanted to be found.

"I read every page," she said quietly.

"My mother didn't leave Richard because she loved you."

Her voice grew steadier.

"She ran from you."

Victor's expression hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I know enough."

Tears filled Isabella's eyes, but her chin never lowered.

"You keep talking about blood."

"My real father isn't the man who gave me his DNA."

"My real father is the man who spent twenty-five years protecting me from you."

Silence.

Victor's jaw tightened.

For the first time...

His perfect mask cracked.

"You sound just like her."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"And that's exactly why I can't let you leave."

Before Isabella could react...

Victor grabbed her arm.

His fingers dug painfully into her skin.

The diary nearly slipped from her hands.

She struggled.

"Let me go!"

He pulled her closer.

His face was only inches from hers.

"If I couldn't have your mother..."

"...I'm not losing you too."

Fear rushed through Isabella's body.

The study door was locked.

The windows were reinforced.

There was nowhere to run.

Victor leaned even closer.

Then he whispered six words that made her blood run cold.

"You'll disappear exactly like she did."

Isabella's heart pounded.

For one terrifying moment...

She truly believed no one was coming.

Then—

A heavy sound echoed from the other side of the study door.

Victor stopped.

So did Isabella.

Someone...

Was outside.

Victor Brooks slowly released Isabella's arm.

Then he laughed.

"You?"

He looked at Richard Carter with open contempt.

"You've already lost everything."

"I took your company."

"I took your reputation."

"I almost took your daughter."

"What exactly do you have left?"

Richard stepped calmly into the room.

His cane struck the wooden floor with slow, steady rhythm.

Not the sound of a defeated man...

The sound of a man who already knew how the story ended.

"You're right about one thing," Richard said quietly.

"You did take my company."

A brief pause.

"I let you."

Victor's smile faltered.

Richard never looked away.

"Did you really believe I'd spend thirty years building an empire..."

"...without planning for the day someone tried to steal it?"

Before Victor could answer...

Another voice came from the doorway.

"Good evening, Victor."

Marcus Hale stepped out of the shadows.

Victor froze.

"You..."

Marcus calmly walked past him.

Then stopped beside Richard.

Isabella stared in disbelief.

Marcus...

The man she believed had betrayed her father...

Had never switched sides at all.

Richard accepted a tablet from Marcus.

"This entire conversation has been recorded."

"The threats."

"The blackmail."

"The forged documents."

"The confession you just made."

Richard turned the screen toward Victor.

"You didn't walk into my house tonight."

"You walked into my evidence."

For the first time...

Victor Brooks looked afraid.

Real fear.

His breathing became uneven.

His eyes darted toward the door.

Toward the windows.

Toward every possible escape.

There wasn't one.

Isabella finally understood.

Her father hadn't fallen.

He had chosen to fall.

He had sacrificed his company...

His reputation...

Even his own daughter's trust...

To lure Victor into exposing himself.

The trap had worked perfectly.

Or so she thought.

Victor slowly smiled again.

Not confidently.

Not triumphantly.

But like a man who still held one final card no one else had seen.

He looked directly at Richard.

"You really did think of everything..."

His voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"Except for one thing."

Richard's expression changed.

Only slightly.

Victor noticed.

So did Isabella.

Victor smiled wider.

Then he slowly turned toward Isabella...

And opened his mouth.

The next sentence would destroy everything she believed about her mother.

"Dad..."

"What did you do?"

The question hung in the room like broken glass.

For the first time in her life...

Isabella saw fear in Richard Carter's eyes.

Not fear for himself.

Fear of finally telling the truth.

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again...

Twenty-four years of silence came pouring out.

"The night your mother left," he said quietly, "she wasn't running away from me."

"She was running away from Victor."

The room fell silent.

Richard's voice trembled.

"She took you with her."

"It was raining so hard I could barely see the road."

"I was following behind..."

"...trying to catch up before he did."

Isabella felt her knees weaken.

Richard swallowed hard.

"Victor chased her."

"He wouldn't let her go."

"I watched the headlights."

"I heard the tires."

"Then..."

"...I heard the crash."

No one spoke.

Richard looked at his daughter.

"When I reached the car..."

"...you were crying."

"Your mother was still alive."

Tears filled his eyes.

"She looked at me..."

"...and made me promise."

"'Protect our daughter.'"

"'Never let him find her.'"

Richard's voice finally broke.

"So I gave you my name."

"I built walls around your life."

"I lied every single day..."

"...because it was the only way I knew how to keep my promise."

Isabella could no longer stop crying.

Everything she had believed was suddenly different.

The silence.

The rules.

The locked gates.

The unanswered questions.

They had never been punishment.

They had been protection.

Victor suddenly laughed.

A cold...

Mocking...

Heartless laugh.

"What a beautiful story."

He slowly applauded.

"Too bad stories aren't evidence."

He looked directly at Isabella.

"There were no cameras."

"No witnesses."

"No proof."

He turned back to Richard.

"It's your word against mine."

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He took one slow step forward.

Then another.

His eyes never left Victor.

A calm smile appeared on his face.

"The mistake you've made your entire life..."

"...is believing your victim died without leaving anything behind."

Victor's smile disappeared.

Richard reached into the inside pocket of his coat.

He slowly pulled out something wrapped in a worn leather pouch.

Victor's face instantly lost all color.

He recognized it.

Before Richard could say another word...

May you like

Victor whispered one sentence that changed everything.
