THE BITTER VINTAGE: PART 2 – THE SHADOW AT THE TABLE 🍷🤫

The restaurant, usually a sanctuary for the city's elite, now felt like a hunting ground. The woman, Elena, sat frozen, her hand still hovering where the glass had been. The boy, Leo, stood ten feet away, his small frame looking far too fragile for the weight of the secret he had just uncovered. As the waiter approached, his face shifted from annoyance to a strange, pale pallor upon seeing the beetle—no, not a beetle—a complex, dark-colored synthetic device camouflaged within the wine, designed to dissolve and release a lethal agent on contact with the alcohol.

"Madam?" the waiter’s voice trembled. He didn't look at the device; he looked toward the entrance, his eyes darting to a man in a gray suit sitting at the bar.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She was a venture capitalist known for aggressive buyouts; she had enemies, yes, but this level of calculated execution was different. She looked at the boy again, his eyes wide and pleading. He wasn't a guest; he was the son of the restaurant's dishwasher, a child who spent his nights hiding in the breakroom while his father worked the grease traps.

"Come here," Elena whispered, her voice finally steadying. She didn't look at the man at the bar, but she felt his presence—a predator watching his trap fail.

As the boy cautiously approached, Elena grabbed her designer clutch and stood up, her movements graceful but urgent. "We are leaving. Now."

"But my dad..." Leo began, but he didn't need to finish. Elena signaled to her own private security, two men in tailored suits who had been dining at a nearby table, unnoticed until that moment. They rose in unison, their presence instantly changing the geometry of the room.

The man at the bar stood up, a glint of desperation in his eyes. He realized the game was up. As Elena moved toward the exit, the man lunged, not for her, but for the boy.

It was a mistake.
