THE ECHO OF A GHOST: THE BILL COMES DUE

THE ECHO OF A GHOST: THE BILL COMES DUE (Part 2)

The silence in the ballroom was not merely an absence of sound; it was a physical weight, pressing against the chests of every guest present. The groom, Julian, stood frozen, the smartphone still vibrating in his hand like a dying pulse. The image on the screen—a grainy, timestamped photograph of a young woman being driven away from a crash site by a man who looked strikingly like him—was the death warrant of his carefully curated life.

The bride, Isabella, reached out to steady herself against a marble pillar, the crystals on her dress clicking rhythmically against the stone. She looked at Julian, seeing not the prince charming she had married, but a stranger whose hands were stained with a history she had never been told.

—"Julian," —she whispered, her voice a brittle thread—. "Who is she? And why is she in the background of that accident?"

Julian didn't answer. He couldn't. His gaze was locked onto the woman in the gray coat—the woman who had once been his partner in a struggle for survival, the one he had abandoned in the wreckage of their past to chase the hollow promise of the fortune he now possessed.

The intruder took a slow, deliberate step toward him. Her ragged coat caught on a gilded chair, but she didn't care. She looked at Isabella with a mixture of pity and cold satisfaction.
