The Final Patrol

The hospital corridor hummed with the muted, rhythmic pulse of life-support machines and the soft squeak of rubber soles on linoleum. Officer Elias Thorne, a man whose life was defined by strict procedure and the unwavering discipline of his K-9 partner, Rex, was merely passing through the ward after a security sweep.

Rex, a German Shepherd whose eyes had seen the grit of urban patrols and the chaos of disaster sites, suddenly halted. His ears swiveled, his tail—usually held at a precise, professional angle—dipped, and he let out a low, vibrating whimper that seemed to rattle deep within his chest. Before Elias could issue a command, the leash went slack. Rex bypassed the officer, his claws clicking softly as he approached a man sitting in a wheelchair near the atrium windows. The man was frail, his skin the color of parchment, draped in a thin blanket that barely seemed to keep out the hospital chill.

Elias braced himself to apologize, to pull the dog back, but the scene unfolding before him froze his heart.
