THE KITCHEN OF SHADOWS: THE RECKONING

THE KITCHEN OF SHADOWS: THE RECKONING (Part 2)

The silence that descended upon the kitchen was absolute. The industrial hum of the walk-in freezers and the distant, muffled applause from the gala above seemed to exist in a different dimension. Mateo’s hand, which had been gently tracing the bruise on the chef’s face, slowly dropped to his side. He didn't look at Valeria; he couldn't. His entire existence was anchored to the woman in the stained apron—Elara.

Valeria’s composure, usually as cold and sharp as a diamond, cracked wide open. She took a step back, her expensive heels clicking loudly against the cold tile, a stark contrast to the heavy, suffocating silence.

—"Mateo, don't listen to her," —Valeria stammered, her voice lacking its usual venom. —"She's a servant. She’s jealous. She’s lying to trap you!"

Mateo finally turned, his movement slow and predatory. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. The air in the room seemed to bend under the weight of his fury.

—"You were the one who recommended her for this position," —Mateo said, his voice dangerously low. —"You told me she was a 'troubled soul' who needed a second chance. You didn't tell me she was the woman I’ve been searching for for five years. You didn't tell me she had my child."

Valeria’s face went pale. She looked toward the exit, but the sous-chefs and kitchen staff, who had been witnessing the abuse for months, blocked her path. Their eyes, once cast down in fear, were now fixed on her with silent, burning resentment.

Elara stood up straight, wiping a smudge of flour from her cheek. She didn't look like a victim anymore; she looked like the storm.
