The Ordinary CEO

The penthouse office was a testament to cold, modern opulence. Walls of floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the city, capturing the golden, dying light of the afternoon. Clara strode across the plush carpet, her heels clicking with a rhythmic, practiced confidence. She had spent months preparing for this interview—the "Golden Ticket" to a position that would solidify her place in the corporate stratosphere. She was arrogant, polished, and ready to demand a salary that would make even the most seasoned executives blink.

She stopped before the massive mahogany desk, her smile practiced and sharp. She had rehearsed her opening line a thousand times, expecting to impress the board of directors. But the room was empty of others. Behind the desk sat only one man, his back to her, silhouetted against the blinding sunset.

"Mr. Sterling," Clara began, her voice smooth and imperious. "I’m sure you’ve had a chance to review my credentials. I don’t believe in wasting time, so let’s talk about why I am exactly what this company needs."

The chair swiveled slowly. The man didn’t stand. He didn’t offer a handshake. He simply looked at her, his expression a calm, unreadable mask.

Clara’s rehearsed smile didn't just falter; it evaporated. The man in the chair was Julian. The same Julian she had discarded six months ago. The same Julian she had looked in the eye while telling him he was "too ordinary," "too stagnant," and "not enough" to keep pace with her ambitions. She had left him in a cramped apartment, convinced he was destined for a life of mediocrity.

"Clara," he said. His voice was steady, lacking the warmth she remembered but carrying a new, heavy weight of authority.

"You?" she whispered, the word barely escaping her throat. She looked around the office, her eyes darting to the nameplate on the desk. J. Sterling, Chief Executive Officer. "This is... this is a joke. How? You were—"

"I was quiet?" Julian finished for her, his eyes cold as polished stone. "I was a risk-averse, average man who didn't have the 'fire' you needed. Is that how you put it?"
