The Photograph of Reckoning

The ballroom of the Sterling Estate was a fortress of gold-leaf molding and crystal chandeliers, filled with people whose greatest concern was the vintage of the champagne. In the center of this world stood Julian Sterling, a man who had spent decades meticulously burying his past beneath layers of influence and calculated cruelty.

He was in the middle of a toast to his own legacy when the music—a complex, haunting melody from a lone violin—sliced through the chatter. It didn’t come from the band. It came from a young man standing in the doorway, his clothes thin and worn, his knuckles white as he gripped the neck of an instrument that looked as fragile as his own health.
