THE SABOTAGED ESCAPE

THE SABOTAGED ESCAPE (Part 2)

The silence that followed the husband's gaze was heavier than the heat of the morning. It wasn't just the realization of the murder attempt that froze the villa—it was the sudden, crushing shift in power.

The husband, Arthur, didn't move toward the villa’s entrance. Instead, he pulled out his phone and made a single, sharp gesture. Almost immediately, the security gates at the villa's perimeter locked with a resounding clank, and the guards who had been standing at attention suddenly turned their backs on the balcony to face the house.

High above, Clara—the wife in white—felt the floor beneath her feet seem to tilt. She reached for the balcony railing to steady herself, her nails digging into the stone. She had expected an accident; a tragic news story that would leave her as the grieving, wealthy widow. She hadn't expected the street rat who had been scavenging through their trash to intervene.

Arthur walked toward the house, his steps slow and deliberate, like a predator who had finally cornered his prey. When he reached the grand staircase, he didn't head for the front door. He walked straight to the internal intercom system.

"Clara," his voice boomed through the villa’s hidden speakers, stripped of all affection. "The police aren't coming for an accident. They’re coming for an attempted homicide."

Clara finally found her voice, though it was a ragged, high-pitched tremor. "Arthur, don't be ridiculous! Someone—that boy!—probably sabotaged the car to frame me! He’s been lurking here for days, I saw him!"
