The Shadow of the Chandelier

The velvet curtains of the service hallway felt heavy against Lucy’s back as her mother pulled her into the shadows. The transition from the brilliant gold of the ballroom to the sterile, fluorescent light of the staff corridor was jarring. Clara Harper’s hands were trembling as she held her daughter’s shoulders, her eyes darting toward the double doors to ensure no guests had witnessed the interaction.

"Lucy, look at me," Clara whispered, her voice a desperate mix of maternal fear and professional panic. "What did I tell you before the guests arrived? The Vale family... they are not our friends. They are the people who pay the mortgage on the small house we rent. If Mr. Vale thinks you are distracting his son, or making a scene, we could lose everything by morning."

"I wasn't making a scene, Mom," Lucy said softly, clutching the worn book of poems against her chest. "Matthew was entirely by himself. He was lonely. Nobody was talking to him, they were just talking about him. I just said hello."

"In their language?" Clara’s brow furrowed, her grip loosening as confusion took over. "Since when do you know how to speak to him?"

"Great-grandfather Samuel," Lucy explained, her thumb tracing the faded gold lettering on the spine of the poetry book. "He taught me the signs he used for Andrew during the war. He told me never to leave anyone behind. Matthew understood me, Mom. He smiled. He actually smiled."
