The Soldier’s Quiet

The silence that settled over the police precinct’s private consultation room was entirely different from the heavy, suffocating silence of Gero’s house. This was the stillness before a tactical operation.

Thomas Brand sat on the metal chair opposite his daughter, his large, calloused hands resting flat on the table. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles jumped beneath his weathered skin. For three decades, he had commanded men in high-stress combat zones, dealing with clear, visible enemies.

But this enemy had worn a tailored Italian suit, shared a Christmas turkey at his table, and shook his hand with a polite, deferential smile.

“Thomas,” Kommissarin Brenner said gently, breaking the silence. She laid a folder on the table. “We have the video. It’s damning. But under the current legal framework, if we arrest Gero Müller right now, his high-priced legal team will have him out on bail before the evening is over. He has deep roots in the community and no prior criminal record. He will claim it’s a private family matter, or worse, that the video was manipulated.”

Thomas didn't look at the detective. His gaze remained fixed on Beate, who was wrapped in his heavy olive-green winter coat, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow.

“He will not touch her again,” Thomas said. His voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a frequency that made the young police officer standing by the door subtly straighten his posture. “If he approaches my daughter, the law will be the least of his concerns.”

“Papa, no,” Beate whispered, her hand reaching out from beneath the oversized sleeve of the coat to touch his arm. The old fear, deeply ingrained by eighteen months of psychological conditioning, flared up. “He’s powerful. He knows the judges, the politicians. He said… he said if I left, he would make sure the court deemed me mentally unfit. He said he would take the baby.”

Thomas leaned forward, covering her hand with his own. The raw, military hardness in his eyes softened into pure, paternal devotion.

“Beate, look at me,” he commanded softly.
