The Tactical Extraction

The air in the bedroom froze instantly, turning heavier and colder than the winter air outside the apartment window.

Colonel James Bennett stood perfectly still, the edge of the blue blanket resting between his calloused fingers. His gaze remained locked on my skin—on the ugly, yellowing purple blooming across my ribs, the deep handprint mocking my swollen belly, and the fractured dignity of the daughter he had raised alone since my mother passed away.

For five agonizing seconds, the only sound was my own shallow, trembling breath.

"Sir..." Ryan stammered, stepping back until his spine hit the door frame. His face had drained of all color, his hands twitching at his sides. "It’s not what it looks like. Emily has been clumsy. With the pregnancy weight, her balance is entirely off. She took a terrible spill in the shower last week, and Linda and I have been doing everything we can to—"

"Shut up," my father said.

He didn't yell. He didn't rage. His voice dropped into a terrifying, sub-zero register—the exact tone he used when a tactical perimeter had been breached and lethal force was authorized. He slowly stood up to his full height, his broad shoulders squaring under the crisp fabric of his dress uniform. The silver eagle pins on his collar caught the dim light of the bedroom, gleaming like sharpened blades.
