CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTAGE THEY PRAYED WOULD NEVER EXIST

The ambulance doors slammed shut just as Preston raised another champagne toast inside the ballroom.

My daughter lay unconscious beneath bright emergency lights.

The wedding continued.

The celebration never stopped.

As if an eight-year-old girl's blood had simply become another stain for the hotel staff to clean.

I sat beside Sophie, gripping her tiny hand while doctors rushed around us.

A young nurse carefully cleaned the dried blood from my sleeves.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered.

Then she looked at Sophie's chart.

Her expression changed.

"Did someone say she fell?"

I stared at her.

"No."

"She was attacked."

The room became silent.

Even the emergency physician stopped writing.

"Attacked?"

"By who?"

I swallowed.

"My brother."

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Finally...

The doctor quietly closed the chart.

"You need to report this immediately."

I looked toward the hospital hallway.

"I already have."

"What do you mean?"

I pulled out the business card the hotel security manager had slipped into my hand before the ambulance left.

Three words were written on the back.

We have everything.

...

Thirty minutes earlier...

While guests toasted the bride and groom...

Hotel Security Director Marcus Hale had already locked the ballroom's surveillance system.

He had watched the replay once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Each viewing made him angrier.

Frame by frame...

The truth emerged.

Preston wasn't searching for his phone.

He had approached Sophie's chair only after casually brushing against her jacket moments before.

The zoom function revealed what no guest had noticed.

His right hand disappeared into the jacket pocket for less than two seconds.

When it came back out...

The phone was already inside.

A perfect setup.

Then came the assault.

The footage showed something even worse than Evelyn remembered.

As Sophie instinctively stepped backward in fear...

Preston deliberately changed his grip on the heavy oak board.

Not defensive.

Not accidental.

He aimed.

Directly at the child's head.

Marcus immediately copied the recordings onto three encrypted drives.

Then he made one phone call.

Not to the groom.

Not to hotel management.

To detectives in the city's Major Assault Unit.

Because wealthy families had lawyers.

Video didn't lie.

...

Back at the reception...

Preston laughed with guests.

His mother praised the wedding cake.

His father congratulated business partners.

The bride smiled for photographs.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Not for another guest.

For four uniformed police officers.

Behind them...

Marcus carried a laptop.

And everyone suddenly realized...

The wedding wasn't over.

May you like

It was about to become a crime scene.
