CHAPTER 3 — THE WEDDING STOPPED... THE TRIAL BEGAN

The music died before the police said a single word.

The bride was still holding a champagne flute when the ballroom doors swung open.

Four officers entered first.

Behind them walked Hotel Security Director Marcus Hale carrying a black evidence case.

Every conversation stopped.

Preston's smile remained.

For exactly three seconds.

Then he noticed the officers weren't walking toward the entrance.

They were walking toward him.

"What is this?" he laughed.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

The lead detective didn't smile.

"Mr. Preston Harper?"

"Yes?"

"We're investigating the assault of a minor."

The ballroom exploded into whispers.

Preston forced a chuckle.

"You mean my niece?"

"She attacked me first."

"My phone was stolen."

"My emotions got the better of me."

"It was an accident."

His mother immediately stepped beside him.

"My son would never intentionally hurt a child."

His father nodded confidently.

"We have two hundred witnesses."

The detective looked around the room.

"Good."

"Then two hundred people can watch what actually happened."

Marcus quietly placed his laptop on the wedding cake table.

The enormous ballroom projector flickered to life.

Guests leaned forward.

No one breathed.

The first video appeared.

A wide-angle view of the ballroom twenty-three minutes before the attack.

Everyone watched Preston greeting guests.

Laughing.

Hugging relatives.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

The footage slowed.

Marcus zoomed in.

"There," he said calmly.

Every eye followed the screen.

Preston casually walked behind Sophie's chair.

She wasn't looking.

She was coloring on the children's activity menu with pink crayons.

Completely innocent.

Preston bumped into her chair.

Smiled.

Apologized.

Then...

His right hand slipped into the pocket of her tiny denim jacket.

The ballroom went silent.

Frame by frame...

The security software magnified his fingers.

A titanium phone appeared in his palm.

He slid it into the jacket pocket.

One smooth movement.

Less than two seconds.

Then he walked away.

Nobody spoke.

One elderly guest covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

The detective paused the footage.

"Would anyone like to explain this?"

Preston laughed.

Too loudly.

"That's impossible."

"The footage has been edited."

Marcus calmly answered.

"Our cameras record directly to three encrypted servers."

"The timestamps are verified."

"The files cannot be altered without destroying the metadata."

The room turned toward Preston.

For the first time all night...

Nobody believed him.

The bride, Vanessa, looked at her husband.

"You..."

"You said she stole it."

"I did."

"But..."

She pointed toward the screen.

"You put it there."

Preston grabbed her arm.

"Vanessa, don't embarrass me."

She pulled away immediately.

"No."

"You embarrassed yourself."

My mother suddenly stepped forward.

"My son was under pressure."

"This wedding cost nearly two million dollars."

"He wasn't thinking clearly."

Marcus looked directly at her.

"So planting evidence on an eight-year-old child..."

"...is understandable?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then came the second recording.

The assault.

Every guest watched Preston rip the solid oak menu from its stand.

They watched me step between him and Sophie.

They watched him shift his grip.

Raise the board higher.

Aim.

Swing.

The impact echoed through the ballroom speakers.

Even though everyone had already heard it once...

This time...

It sounded even worse.

Several women burst into tears.

One man whispered,

"He tried to kill her..."

The detective paused the image the instant before impact.

"You claimed this was an accident."

He enlarged the frame.

Preston's eyes weren't looking at me.

They weren't looking at the menu.

They were locked...

On Sophie.

The detective spoke quietly.

"This wasn't reckless."

"This was targeted."

The ballroom that had gathered for a wedding...

Was now watching the beginning of a murder investigation.

Preston finally snapped.

He flipped the projector table.

The laptop crashed to the floor.

"ENOUGH!"

He pointed at me.

"This is her fault!"

"She always hated me!"

"She poisoned that little girl against me!"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had already seen the truth.

The golden son...

Wasn't golden anymore.

He was simply exposed.

The detective stepped forward.

"Preston Harper."

"You are under arrest for aggravated assault of a child..."

"...evidence tampering..."

"...and filing a false criminal accusation."

Cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

The loudest sound in the ballroom.

Guests instinctively stepped away from him.

The same people who had applauded him thirty minutes earlier...

Now wouldn't even look him in the eye.

As officers led him toward the exit...

He turned and screamed at my parents.

"DO SOMETHING!"

For once...

May you like

They couldn't.

Because the cameras had seen everything.
