THE SHADOW OF MEMORY

THE SHADOW OF MEMORY (Part 2)

The darkness was not merely an absence of light; it was a physical weight that silenced every heart in the room. In that suffocating void, the only sound was the frantic, shallow breathing of a child and the distant, rhythmic thumping of a security door slamming shut.

When the emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the room in a sickly, pulsating red, the scene had shifted. Evelyn was on her knees, her professional composure completely shattered. She was no longer looking at Victor; her eyes were locked onto Sofia, who was still clutching her vest as if her life depended on it. Evelyn’s fingers, trembling uncontrollably, hovered over the girl’s hair—the same golden curls she had kissed goodbye in a hospital room years ago, a day she had been told would be their last.
